Gilbert Gallery

On exhibition at the Gilbert Gallery in The Link
Winter 2026

Ruth Davey (1923-2023) was a stalwart of the Hamilton arts scene ever since the 1960s when she joined the Waikato Society of Arts.  By 1973 she had established printmaking as one of the disciplines taught in the WSA Art School (now located at Artspost, 120 Victoria Street – the south end).

Ruth’s influence on printmaking in the Waikato spread through her many students, and through her own exhibitions – held right into her late 90s.  In recognition of Ruth’s importance, Te Whare Taonga o Waikato Museum & Gallery acquired her collection of over 50 sketchbooks, dating back to the 1950s, and over 250 of her prints and drawings.

Ruth was a foundation member of Print Council Aotearoa NZ.  The Museum held a major exhibition of her work December 2020 to March 2021.  A new gallery at Artspost is named in her honour.  All proceeds from the sale of her eight prints go toward the prestigious Ruth Davey Merit in Printmaking prize at the New Zealand Painting and Printmaking Awards (NZPPA).  Sales and enquiry details, and titles, are listed on the pillars in our Gilbert Gallery.  Enjoy!
